Creating a character is simple. Doing it the right way for your DM is just as simple, I promise. We are playing 3.5 because I’m old fashioned. You are not limited on race and class. You may choose from a book or from the wiki, homebrew is an option. I’m not limiting what race and class you can be, so your race and class must be approved by me! Propose your race and class by PMing me. Don’t just state your race and class (unless it’s of the basic variety) and don’t just link me to your race and class or copy and paste the description! Contrary to what this entire forum may lead you to believe, I’m horrendously lazy. Spark notes and bullet the basic information about your race and class as well as links or information on what books you got the information out of. Once you are approved you can continue character creation.
You may create your character using an online sheet or a paper one. If you need a sheet to print, let me know! Your sheet must be for 3.5 and must include places for: ability scores, combat options, saving throws, AC, gear, magic/spells etc (if you use these), familiars/animal companions (if you use these), skills, racial traits/class features, and feats. You may think this is self-explanatory but I’ve seen plenty of sheets that don’t include all of these.
Once you’ve been approved for race and class, roll your ability scores. (You can use your own dice or an online dice roller, here’s one I have found works well.) This is done by rolling 4 d6, ignoring the lowest of the rolls, and adding the remaining 3 rolls together. If your total is lower than a 10 you can reroll. Assign your rolls to the scores you find most important. To explain different stats with tomatoes (I stole this from someone): Strength is being able to crush a tomato, dexterity is being able to dodge a tomato, constitution is being able to eat a bad tomato, intelligence is knowing a tomato is a fruit, wisdom is knowing not to put a tomato in a fruit salad, charisma is being able to sell a tomato based fruit salad.
Add any bonuses or penalties to your ability scores from your race, add the totals, then enter modifiers. Modifiers are determined by your total ability scores. If your ability score is 10-11 modifier is 0, 12-13 is 1, 14-15 is 2, 16-17 is 3, 18-19 is 4, 20-21 is 5. Always use modifiers instead of totals!!!
For hit points at level 1 use your total hit die, don’t roll it, and add your con MODIFIER. Enter your base attack bonus based on your class. Your speed is in your race, initiative is your dex MODIFIER. Add up grapple. Saving throws are numbers for your class added with ability MODIFIERS. Add up armor class. Touch AC is your armor class minus armor and shield bonus (if/when you get that), flat-footed is armor class minus dex MODIFIER. Your inventory will be determined by me when the game starts (this includes weapons and armor).
Check off trained skills based on your class, calculate skill points based on your race and assign them as you please. If you want to assign points to skills you aren’t trained in (the skills listed under class) it will take 2 points instead of 1 to add a rank. Add them to modifiers for totals. Record racial traits and class features. Your number of feats is determined by your race. All feats must be approved by me. PM me a quick description of the feat, since feats will likely be secrets for most players.
You must also select alignment and I’m going to expect you to act to your alignment. Here’s a quick description of alignments!
Lawful good: laws are good if they are just and fair. Lawful neutral: laws are good because they are laws. Lawful evil: laws are good, but only if they benefit me. Neutral good: let’s do the right thing. True neutral: please leave me alone. Neutral evil: what’s in it for me. Chaotic good: personal freedom is the most important thing in the world and I would die for others freedom. Chaotic neutral: personal freedom is the most important thing in the world and I would die for mine. Chaotic evil: personal freedom is the most important thing in the world, mine more than yours.
