Based on your actions, you'll at some point get a message stating you've leveled! Everyone will not level at the same time. At the same time, you won't level just because you're fighting things. Progressive actions will give you experience. Since this is a game based on surviving, not just killing and adventuring, you leveling will be based on various actions.
When you have leveled, I will also give you three abilities you can roll to increase. (This is something new to those of you who haven't played with me in the past few years.) The abilities I choose will come from the actions you took which led to you leveling. You will roll a d20 and see if your roll is greater than your base score. If it is, you can increase it by one point. This will change your total score and may change your modifier. If a modifier does change, be sure to change where that modifier appears throughout your character sheet.
Once your ability scores have been adjusted, you'll roll your hit die and add that as well your con modifier to your total hit points. Your base attack bonus and saving throws will adjust based on your class. You may or may not gain new traits based on your race and class. You will also get more skill points, which you can assign to what skills you like. As was true in the first case, any skill you aren't train in will take 2 points to assign 1 rank.
Feel free to ask any questions about leveling here.
