How to Do Things

Following is pieces of information on how to do various things in the game. To keep things moving smoothly please familiarize yourself with how to post when you want to attempt to do things.
Typically in a game of Dungeons and Dragons you’ll state what you want to do, the DM will decide if this is acceptable and tell you what to roll. For this, we’re going to skip half of that step. When you want to do something you’ll state what you want to do and your roll in the same post. Just assume you can do whatever you want until I say otherwise, so we can skip the whole approval process and just move right along. Based on what you want to do and what you roll, I’ll tell you if you succeed or not and you can continue.
**If you roll a natural 20, tell me you’ve rolled a natural 20, if you’re adding numbers and get a 20 total, specify this as an unnatural 20!**
• Use skills: If you want to use a skill listed, you’ll simply say what you want to do, roll a d20, and add your skill points to your roll. Example: You want to jump over a fence, you roll a d20 and get an 18, your jump is 3. You’ll say “I want to jump over that fence. I rolled a 21.”
• Do things not listed in skills: If you want to do something that really has no context to your skill list, say what you want to do and roll a d20 but don’t add anything. If what you want to do would clearly use an ability score, also list your ability modifier but DON’T add them. Example: You want to dig a hole with a crowbar (it’s happened), you roll a d20 and get an 18, you think str has a lot to do with digging and your str MODIFIER is 3. You’ll say “I want to dig a hole with a crowbar. I rolled an 18 and my str is 3.”
• Battle: when you want to attack someone, you must roll initiative. This is a d20 + initiative. Much like when using skills, you’ll either state you want to attack someone or enter the fight and state your initiative roll in the same post. Your order of attack will be stated by the DM at the beginning of combat based on your initiative roll. Please PM the DM your AC before you begin battle. Unless your AC changes, you don’t need to give your AC information multiple times. (This way I can moderate whether attacks go through or not without tempting people to say they rolled higher than they did.) When it is your turn to attack in battle, you’ll give a brief description of what you want to accomplish, your attack roll, and your damage roll.
o Close combat roll: to roll for a melee attack, roll a d20, add your base attack bonus, strength MODIFIER, and size modifier. Although live sessions would wait to be told if this attack is successful before rolling damage, you’ll roll damage now as well to keep things moving more quickly. The dice you roll for damage is based on your weapon stats, for melee or throwing you’ll add your strength MODIFIER to damage.
o Ranged combat roll: to roll for a ranged attack, roll a d20, add your base attack bonus, dexterity MODIFIER, range penalty (this only applies if you are attempting to hit something farther away than what your weapon range is), and size modifier. Although live sessions would wait to be told if this attack is successful before rolling damage, you’ll roll damage now as well to keep things moving more quickly. The dice you roll for damage is based on your weapon stats, for melee or throwing you’ll add your strength MODIFIER to damage; this does not apply to any form of bow or something else that isn’t a throwing weapon.
• Anything you want to keep secret from your fellow players you can PM me with the same information you would provide in the forum. Depending upon your success, I will give you information on what to post or post information myself.
If you have any questions on how to do things, ask them here. I’ll answer your question and probably update this post with that information. Questions are helpful!
